Lake Room Addition

The existing home is sited on a gentle grade sloping toward a lake cherished for its picturesque views of jumping fish and water fowl. The problem was that an existing deck was ill-proportioned for entertaining and provided no protection from the summer sun or biting insects. Also an existing two-story gazebo obscured views of the lake while minimal kitchen fenestration ignored the view.

The program required the replacement of the deck and gazebo with a room accessible from the Kitchen with panoramic views of the lake, a stair down to the backyard, and a porch for protected exterior entertaining accessible from the walk-out basement below. The addition should improve the connection to the lake from within the kitchen and basement without blocking other views or impacting other rooms.

The solution is a semi-elliptically shaped two-story addition with a faceted panorama of windows set upon a masonry base defined by it's arched openings, all topped by a conical roof. The lake room is perched above the water and adjacent to the Kitchen while the porch offers a protected outdoors experience below. The kitchen fenestration provides panoramic lake views through the addition while a stair, following the elliptical wall curvature, descends to the backyard.
